Past Tents | Matthew 17:1–9 | Transfiguration Sunday

Do you remember “Kodak Moments”? The idea that when something beautiful happens, you capture it. Freeze it. Make sure you can keep it.

On the Mount of Transfiguration, Peter tries to do something similar. Faced with overwhelming glory, he reaches for tents—structures to preserve the moment and hold onto what feels holy.

But the story won’t let him stay there.

In this sermon, we explore how awe disrupts our need for control and invites us into something deeper than explanation or preservation. The disciples don’t come down the mountain with answers. They come down with Jesus.

And sometimes that is enough.

Where might we be trying to manage holiness instead of receiving it? What “tents” do we build when God feels overwhelming?

Transfiguration Sunday reminds us:

It’s not a Kodak moment. It’s a calling.
