Detours Are Not Defeats | Matthew 2:13–23

Faith rarely unfolds in straight lines.

In this sermon from Matthew 2:13–23, we explore the lesser-told part of the Christmas story: Joseph’s dreams, the flight to Egypt, the reroute to Nazareth, and what it means to trust God when the path changes unexpectedly.

Joseph is warned in a dream to flee in the night. Later, when it finally seems safe to return home, he is warned again and sent somewhere smaller, quieter, and far less impressive. Not Bethlehem. Not Jerusalem. Nazareth.

This sermon reflects on a simple but challenging truth: sometimes God’s guidance does not move us forward. Sometimes it moves us aside. And sometimes the detour itself is mercy.

Along the way, we consider themes of fear and faith, displacement and protection, hidden obedience, and the reality that following God does not always make life easier, but it does keep us on the path where grace can meet us.

If you have ever felt frustrated by a change in plans, uncertain about the road you are on, or wondered whether a quieter season of life still matters, this message is for you.

“Guide us to Thy perfect light.”
