The Ones Who Came | Matthew 5:1–12

We’ve heard the Beatitudes before.

“Blessed are the poor in spirit.”

“Blessed are those who mourn.”

“Blessed are the meek.”

But what did those words sound like the first time they were spoken?

In this sermon from Matthew 5:1–12, we imagine the hillside where Jesus sat down to teach. Before the words were familiar, before they were framed on walls or printed in programs, they were spoken into real lives—into grief, skepticism, restlessness, exhaustion, longing.

The Beatitudes are not advice.

They are not a checklist.

They are a declaration.

Jesus names who is blessed—not the strong, not the impressive, not the certain—but the ones who came. The ones who carried questions. The ones who carried sorrow. The ones who weren’t sure what they were hoping for.

This message explores what it means for blessing to show up where we least expect it—and how the kingdom of heaven might already be closer than we realize.
